This programme is intended for learners of English as an additional language, who wish to pursue further English language or destination subject study in an academic context. Graduates will have the language skills required to communicate independently and effectively in familiar and some less familiar situations with fluency and flexibility in academic settings. This qualification is at a level comparable to the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) mid B2. This qualification allows educational institutions to make informed judgements regarding the level at which the graduate can use English for academic purposes.

The combined NZCEL Level 3 and 4 course strengthens learners’ confidence and competence in everyday and academic English through an integrated, progressive programme. Students develop their ability to understand and respond to a range of spoken and written texts, from practical workplace communication to more structured academic materials. The course builds essential skills in reading for key information, writing coherent paragraphs, participating in discussions, and delivering short presentations. Learners also expand their vocabulary, improve grammatical accuracy, and practise using English in real life and study related contexts. By the end of the course, students are prepared to move into higher level English study with greater fluency, clarity, and independence.

As ACEL starts at Level 3 and then progresses to Level 4, the applicant must meet one of the following requirements:

1. A satisfactory score in Placement Test

2. NZCEL L2 certificate

3. IELTS overall score of 5.0

4. PTE overall score of 36
